Chet is in town! We loaded the bikes and shuttled up to Engineer Mountain in the fall. Sure, we have been here before, but this time, it’s different.
The La Plata mountains, just north of Durango, are famous for their beauty and accessibility. It’s not an accident that the stretch of US Highway 550 north of town is called the Million Dollar Highway and is referred to by many as the most beautiful stretch of paved road in America.
Engineer Mountain is a great hike and a challenging mountain bike ride. It starts at 10,000 feet above sea level and continues up a rocky trail to top out at almost 12,000 feet. Sure, that’s less than 2000 feet of climbing, but you really feel it when you are starting out that high up!
We partied all the way up the mountain and prepared for the fun ride down. After all – it was October and the leaves were amazing!
